Key Nutritional Requirements

You generally need more calories and specific nutrients while breastfeeding than you did during pregnancy.

Calories

+330–500 cal/day

Total roughly 2,000–2,500 calories depending on activity.

Protein

+25g / day

Essential for milk production. Total target ~71g/day.

Fluids

3–4 Liters

Oxytocin triggers thirst. Drink a glass every time you nurse.

Calcium

1,000–1,300 mg

Vital to prevent bone leaching.

Iron

Replenish Stores

Necessary to recover from delivery blood loss.

DHA (Omega-3)

Critical

For baby’s brain and eye development.

Important Supplements

Vitamin D

Breast milk is often low in Vitamin D. Pediatricians usually recommend giving the baby 400 IU drops directly.
